A carer assessment

A carer assessment is a look at the caring situation and the impact that caring for someone has on you – it will also help to see if the person you look after is getting enough support from others.

A carer assessment can take some time to complete. If you feel that during the assessment you would like to stop and come back to it at any point, tell us, we’ll arrange to come back to complete it with you. It might be that we feel we need to give some thought to the support that you need after a carer assessment so we may suggest that we make a return visit to complete the Support Plan with you.

Doing an assessment will start to build a picture about you, your situation, and what effect caring has on you. It will also help to establish if there are things that you want to achieve. It will create a picture of any existing connections, such as support you already have from organisations, friends, family and how you are connected in your local community.

Assessment provides the information to consider whether or not you need support and what for.
