In Oxfordshire, adults with learning disabilities have been reshaping a service designed to enhance their short break options. Through a collaborative process known as coproduction, individuals who utilise the service, along with their families and caregivers, have contributed to its development. The resulting adult learning disability short break program will provide familiar building-based stays and more adaptable community-based alternatives.

Oxfordshire County Council said, “With the support of organisations including My Life, My Choice and Oxfordshire Family Support Network, the adults’ short breaks service has been completely redesigned, helping to put people with learning disabilities in control of their support options.”

The council will begin the process of inviting organisations to bid to provide the new services, with the contract due to start in April 2025. The current service will continue unchanged until that point.
