Oxford traffic filter trial: what carers need to know

If you drive as part of your caring role, it’s worth being aware of changes coming to Oxford’s roads.

From 28 September, Oxfordshire County Council’s traffic filter trial will begin, replacing the temporary congestion charge. The trial aims to reduce traffic in the city and will introduce traffic filters at six locations.

For unpaid carers, journeys are often an important part of providing support — whether that means travelling to appointments, collecting prescriptions, shopping, or visiting the person you care for. If your caring role involves driving in or around Oxford, the changes may affect how you plan your journeys.

What is changing?

The traffic filter trial will work in a similar way to the previous congestion charge, with permits available for eligible drivers. However, from 28 September, drivers will no longer be able to pay a daily congestion charge to pass through the traffic filters.

Most existing congestion charge permits will automatically transfer to traffic filter permits. If you do not already have a permit and think you may need one, you can apply through Oxfordshire County Council’s website.
