Helen Beard: Carers Adviser

Helen is a Carers Adviser for Oxford City. She brings over 40 years of experience in children’s nursing and mental health, having worked in hospitals, as a children’s community nurse in special schools, and most recently for six years as a senior mental health practitioner in CAMHS. Alongside her professional expertise, she has extensive personal experience as a carer.
“I joined Carers Oxfordshire in 2025 because I wanted to focus on supporting carers directly. I know from personal experience how much of an impact caring can have, and I want to help carers feel heard, supported, and valued.
The best part of my role is connecting with carers, listening to their stories, and helping them access the support they need. My advice to any carer who might be hesitant to reach out is: it’s a safe, confidential, and non-judgemental space — taking that first step is about looking after yourself as well as the person you care for.”
Helen’s own caring experience spans many roles: she is a parent carer for her autistic son, a respite carer for her nephew and, over the last 18 months, a part-time carer for her mother with dementia. This lived experience gives her a deep understanding of the challenges carers face and the difference the right support can make.
In her free time, Helen enjoys walking with her dog, yoga, dancing, spending time with friends and family, and listening to music.
