Protecting Carers’ Benefits

Carers UK has been leading a national campaign to challenge Government proposals that would have made major cuts to Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and carers’ benefits. These changes could have seen around 150,000 unpaid carers lose their entitlements by the end of the decade.

Thanks to strong campaigning from carers, disabled people, and Carers UK, the Government has now removed all changes to PIP and carers’ benefits from its Bill. Any future changes to PIP will only be considered after Autumn 2026, following a full review that will include carers’ organisations.

However, some changes to Universal Credit remain in the legislation and will affect new claimants from 2026. Carers UK will continue to work with partners to challenge these and ensure carers’ voices are heard.
