Make Work Pay: employment rights for unpaid carers and parents of seriously ill children – GOV.UK

Help shape employment rights for unpaid carers

The UK Government wants to hear from unpaid carers about their experiences of balancing work and caring, and whether current employment rights go far enough.

This consultation is reviewing the support available to unpaid carers in the workplace, including the impact of the Carer’s Leave Act 2023. It is also looking at whether more support is needed for parents of seriously ill children.

The Government is asking for views on:

  • the information and guidance available to unpaid carers
  • whether further workplace support is needed
  • what support would make the biggest difference to unpaid carers and parents of seriously ill children

Whether you’re an unpaid carer, an employer, support carers in your role, or have experience of unpaid care, your views can help shape future policy.

The consultation closes at 11.59pm on 1 September 2026.
