CARERS WEEK 2023: 5 -11TH JUNE

Carers Oxfordshire is proud to take part in Carers Week the annual campaign from Carers UK. Its purpose is to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face, and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don’t think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.
This year’s theme is ‘Recognising and supporting carers in the community’. Encouraging communities to come together to recognise the huge contribution unpaid carers make to society. Politicians, employers, health and social services, businesses, education providers and members of the public all have a role to play in raising awareness of caring and making sure carers are able to access the information and support they need.
We hope you’ll join us in supporting Carers Week 2023.
EVENTS
Our team will be out and about across Oxfordshire throughout the week. Come and meet us at one of our events.
6th June – 10am to 3pm – Information Day with coffee and cakes from www.fudginghell.co.uk – Abingdon Health and Wellbeing Centre – The Abbey Centre, Crabtree Pl, Abingdon OX14 3GD – with Rethink Mental Illness Oxfordshire and Dementia Oxfordshire
6th June – 10am to 1pm – Woolgate Shopping Centre – Market Square, Witney, OX28 6AP with Dementia Oxfordshire
7th June – 10am to 7pm – Celebrating Oxford’s unpaid carers – a day of talks, treats, support and information for carers based in Oxford City – Barracks Lane Community Garden, OX4 2AP – with Rethink Mental Illness Oxfordshire
9th June – 9 am to 4 pm – Bicester Market – Sheep St, OX26 6TB – with Rethink Mental Illness OxfordshireDementia Oxfordshire & Community Information Network

CARER STORIES
To celebrate Carers Week and raise awareness of caring, we’re sharing the stories of some of the carers we speak to in Oxfordshire.
Shirley is 58, from Witney and cares for her son Andrew who is 25. She has looked after him all his life. She says “Andrew has Asperger’s syndrome and all the various bits and pieces that go with it. A lot of mental health issues.”
Ann’s Story
Ann was born in 1943, lives in Long Wittenham and has been a carer for over fifty years. “I was caring for my aunt, my mother and a husband who was starting to get dementia.”
Abena’s Story –
Abena lives in Oxford and cares for her three sons, two of which have autism. “These kids are so special. When they know you are happy, you have that energy.”
