Advancing not retiring – Public lecture from Penny Thewlis

October 11, 2023 @ 6:00 pm 7:00 pm

John Henry Brookes Lecture Theatre, Headington Campus

Where do our attitudes to age come from, why do they matter, who can change them and how?

Join Penny Thewlis, formerly CEO of Carers Oxfordshire and Age UK Oxfordshire, now advancing into later life. She will provide a provocation focused on what advancing into older age means, the challenges of ageism and the use of language. Penny will explore the questions of where our attitudes to age come from, why they matter, who can change them and how?

The focus will be on the politics of ageing through a personal lens. Penny trained as a drama teacher and will be reflecting on how that discipline led her to Age UK Oxfordshire. She will be tackling serious issues with more than a hint of fun and challenging people and institutions to think about what we can all do to change the narrative.

Following Penny’s talk there will be a panel discussion and plenty of time for audience participation.

The panel will be introduced by Jason Danely, Chair of the Healthy Ageing and Care network and includes:

Margaret Simpson, Chair of Oxford 50+

Paul Jackson, Senior Lecturer, Oxford Brookes Business School

Ben Spencer, Research Fellow in Built Environment and Healthy Ageing

This event is hosted by Professor Linda King, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research and Global Partnerships and the Healthy Ageing & Care Research and Knowledge Exchange Network to celebrate UN International Day of Older Persons. All attendees are invited to join for pre-event drinks and light refreshments starting from 5pm.
